Intermediate Cinematography
Course Duration: Mon 5 Dec & Tue 6 Dec 2011
Times: 4pm-6.30pm

Basic Camera Skills

This workshop enables participants to build on existing skills gained during previous training. Participants will construct / improvise a simple scenario for camera in order to explore cinematography vocabulary and techniques. Participants can use this exercise to experiment with shot size, for example the use of macro (close-up) to create a claustrophobic world. They will be given the chance to experiment with lighting, for example the use of Key Light to create a ‘Noir' look or the use of Expressionistic colour as a visual metaphor. This workshop aims to demonstrate how a simple scenario can be shot more creatively for greater visual effect. Time will also be set aside to troubleshoot individual teacher's issues and problems.

Intermediate Sound: Constructing a Soundscape
Course Date: Wed 7 Dec 2011
Times: 4pm-6.30pm

Basic Sound & Editing Skills

This workshop will explore the concept of a ‘Soundscape’ to encourage pupils to think more creatively about the use of sound in their films. Participants will be given the chance to construct a believable sound backdrop, i.e. a cityscape, a crowded café, etc... Soundscapes can be used to heighten tension within a scene by focusing or manipulating everyday sounds. Participants will also look at building a more ‘abstract’ soundscape, an example of which would be the use of sound in David Lynch’s ‘Eraserhead’.

CCEA Moving Image Arts Industry Presentation
Date: Wed 30 Nov 2011
Time: 10.15am

Each year, the Foyle Film Festival features CCEA Moving Image Arts Day. As part of this special event an industry professional is invited to attend and give a talk to MIA students. In previous years special guests have included renowned local actor Gerard McSorley, who has worked with some of the world’s greatest film directors such as Neil Jordan, Jim Sheridan, Ridley Scott, Fernando Meirelles, Alan Parker and Paul Greengrass. Students have also been lucky to attend a talk given by Irish director Juanita Wilson. Juanita received an Oscar® nomination for her short film The Door, and was also awarded the Foyle Film Festival’s Light In Motion (LIM) Award for Best Irish Short. Juanita’s first feature film As If I Am Not There was released to great critical acclaim in 2010. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain experience and advice from top professionals in the film industry. The special guest for this year’s MIA Industry Presentation has still to be announced. Teachers will be informed as soon as details have been finalised.

CCEA Moving Image Arts Award Ceremony
Date: Wed 30 Nov 2011
Time: 1pm

The 24th Foyle Film Festival continues its support for the annual showcase of the best short films from Moving Image Arts students. The Foyle Film Festival introduced this unique award a number of years ago with the support and sponsorship of Michael Bond from Derry Crystal, and this annual event has just gone from strength to strength. The festival is delighted to once again celebrate and highlight the talent, imagination, and creativity of the MIA students by awarding the beautiful Derry City Crystal Awards for the best films. It is with a great deal of pride and pleasure that the Foyle Film Festival provides a platform for the work of these budding young filmmakers. The festival hopes to be accepting the work of MIA students into the Light In Motion (LIM) Competition – which is Oscar® affiliated – in the not too distant future.
